Argentina’s Patagonia region, long known for jagged mountain peaks, sweeping glaciers and some of the emptiest landscapes on the continent, has quietly become one of the more intriguing frontiers in the global race to build artificial intelligence infrastructure. Investors scouting locations for mega data centers are increasingly drawn to the region’s cold climate, abundant renewable energy potential, shale gas reserves and vast stretches of undeveloped land, all factors that matter enormously to companies trying to build server farms capable of running the enormous computing workloads AI models now demand.

What makes Patagonia particularly attractive right now isn’t just its natural resources. It’s the near-total absence of the kind of public backlash that has slowed data center development elsewhere in the world. In the United States, hyperscalers racing to build server farms have increasingly run into anti-data-center campaigns from local communities worried about strained power grids, environmental impact and rising utility bills. Argentina hasn’t experienced that friction yet, largely because large-scale data centers haven’t been part of daily life there the way they have in parts of the US. Supporters of the projects argue the facilities are essential infrastructure for the broader AI boom, capable of generating meaningful local tax revenue while being built with sustainability considerations from the outset, rather than retrofitted onto older, less efficient designs.

The most prominent project driving this wave of interest is Stargate Argentina, a partnership between OpenAI and Argentine-US energy company Sur Energy. The two companies signed a letter of intent covering a data center project pitched as a $25 billion investment, aimed at building AI infrastructure with a capacity of up to 500 megawatts, a scale that would rank among the larger facilities anywhere in the world. The project marks OpenAI’s first data center venture in Latin America, and Argentine officials have framed it as a chance to position the country at the front of the global AI infrastructure race rather than on the sidelines of it. According to reporting on the initiative, the first phase of construction, roughly 100 megawatts, is expected to begin ramping up with completion targeted for 2027, though the exact site within Patagonia has not been publicly disclosed.

OpenAI’s involvement matters here beyond just the dollar figure attached to the project. The company has been aggressively pursuing data center capacity worldwide as demand for running its AI models continues to outpace available computing infrastructure, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously said the company intends to partner directly with national governments to expand data center capacity in various regions. Argentina’s government, under President Javier Milei, has actively courted that kind of investment as part of a broader strategy to position the country as a regional technology hub, offering regulatory and tax incentives through Argentina’s Incentive Regime for Large Investments, known locally as RIGI, which is designed specifically to attract large-scale foreign capital into sectors like energy and technology infrastructure.

Beyond the OpenAI-Sur Energy partnership, interest in Argentine data center sites extends well beyond Patagonia itself. In Buenos Aires province, companies have been actively scouring potential locations, and Pampa Energia, one of Argentina’s major energy providers, has agreed to supply 30 megawatts of power for the initial stage of a data center project in a free trade zone located in the city of Bahia Blanca, a coastal area known for strong wind power resources. Pablo Amarelle, general manager of the free trade zone’s concessionaire, has said the company has already begun constructing an IT park to support the project, with final investment agreements expected by late 2026. That timeline suggests Argentina’s data center ambitions are moving from speculative interest toward concrete construction commitments more quickly than some observers might have expected given the scale of capital involved.

Hyperscalers already leasing space in various Argentine facilities are reportedly weighing further expansion as well, exploring additional possibilities for scaling up their footprint in the country rather than treating their initial investments as one-off bets. The appeal of Patagonia specifically comes down to a combination of factors that are becoming increasingly valuable as AI workloads grow more power-hungry and heat-intensive. Cooling represents one of the largest ongoing operational costs and environmental concerns for any large data center, since the dense racks of servers running AI training and inference workloads generate enormous amounts of heat that must be continuously dissipated. Patagonia’s naturally cool climate offers a built-in advantage here, potentially reducing the amount of energy and water needed for cooling compared to facilities built in hotter regions, where extensive air conditioning or water-based cooling systems are often required to keep servers operating within safe temperature ranges.

Renewable energy access adds another layer to the region’s appeal. Wind power in particular has significant potential across Patagonia and coastal areas like Bahia Blanca, giving data center operators a pathway toward running facilities on cleaner energy sources rather than relying heavily on fossil fuel generation, something that matters both for corporate sustainability commitments and for keeping long-term operating costs more predictable as global attention on data center energy consumption continues to intensify.

There are real questions still to be answered as these projects move from letters of intent toward actual construction and operation. Argentina’s economy has faced significant volatility in recent years, and attracting the kind of sustained, multi-billion-dollar capital commitment these projects require depends heavily on maintaining regulatory stability and investor confidence over a timeline that stretches years, not months. It also remains to be seen whether the current lack of local opposition to data center development persists once facilities actually begin operating at scale and communities start to experience the practical realities of living near massive server farms, including their demands on local power grids and water resources, even in a region with abundant renewable energy potential.

For now, though, Argentina appears to be capitalizing on a genuine window of opportunity. As established data center markets in the United States and parts of Europe run into mounting local resistance and grid capacity constraints, companies racing to secure the computing infrastructure needed to support the next generation of AI development are looking for alternatives, and Patagonia’s combination of natural cooling advantages, renewable energy resources and open land is proving to be a compelling pitch. Whether the country can convert that early interest into a genuinely sustainable, long-term technology hub, rather than a handful of isolated mega-projects, will likely depend on how well it manages the infrastructure, community relations and economic policy questions that inevitably come with hosting facilities of this scale.
