Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Every year, millions of students across West Africa sit exams that decide where they study and what jobs they can apply for. The body that sets, secures, marks and certifies many of those exams now has a new chief executive. Dr Amos Josiah Dangut took office as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on October 1, 2026. He rose through the council over more than two decades, which makes his story a case study in institutional leadership. This biography covers his age, education, career and the challenges he inherits.

Who Is Amos Dangut?

Amos Josiah Dangut is a Nigerian education administrator, test development specialist and scholar. He is the 14th Registrar of WAEC, the regional body that conducts examinations including the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across its member countries. He succeeds Pateh Bah of The Gambia. Before this appointment, he was Head of the Nigeria National Office, the council’s largest national operation.

Amos Dangut’s Age and Early Life

Dangut was born on October 2, 1967, in Mbar District of Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. He turned 59 this month. He attended Government Secondary School in Riyom from 1981 to 1983 and Government Science School in Kuru from 1983 to 1986, where he earned his school certificate. Both schools are in Plateau State, which makes his early education entirely local.

Amos Dangut’s Education

His academic record is long and unusual for an examinations executive. He earned a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, in 1991. He then completed a Master of Science in Animal Science at the University of Ibadan in 1994 and a PhD in Animal Science at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, in 2017. In 2020 he added a Master of Education in Administration and Planning from the National Open University of Nigeria.

The sequence shows a shift in focus. His first three degrees are in animal science, while his most recent one is in education administration. That final qualification matches the work he does now, which is running an institution that depends on planning, logistics and rules.

Early Career in Teaching

After completing national youth service in 1991 and 1992, Dangut began working in education in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos. He also worked as a WAEC examiner during this period, which gave him a first look at the system he would later lead. In 1998, he joined WAEC as an Assistant Registrar.

Rising Through WAEC

His WAEC career followed a classic progression through different departments. He started in the Test Development Division at Ogba in Lagos, where he worked from 1998 to 2005, building question papers and assessment materials. He then moved to Uyo as Senior Assistant Registrar and Head of Examinations Security, and later held the same type of role in Bauchi. From late 2011, he served as Branch Controller in Yola.

Later roles included Deputy Registrar, Controller of the Post-Examinations Department and Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja. In October 2023, he became Head of the Nigeria National Office, a post he held until September 2026. Each stage added a different skill: how exams are written, how they are secured, how they are marked and how results are delivered.

He also received a commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for the transparent conduct of examinations between 2000 and 2006, according to the council.

Technology at WAEC

The new Registrar’s best-known work involves digital tools. WAEC’s statement credits him with leading several technology projects as Head of the Nigeria National Office, including the introduction of the Computer-Based WASSCE, the serialisation of question papers and a Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also oversaw a digital certificate portal, a WAEC e-study platform, a digital records archive and systems for exam logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance. WAEC says he has used information and communications technology for about 25 years to improve test development, administration and post-exam activities.

These tools address concrete problems. Serialised papers make leaks easier to trace. Electronic marking reduces the chance of errors in scoring. A digital archive helps candidates and employers verify certificates. For a body whose value depends on public trust, security and verification are the product.

How He Became Registrar

WAEC’s International Governing Board ratified his appointment at the Council’s 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026. He officially took office on October 1, 2026. The council says the board chose him partly because of his integrity, transparency, diligence and commitment to service.

He also holds regional roles outside WAEC. He serves as the West African sub-regional representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa, has represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education, and has published research in national and international journals.

What the Registrar’s Job Involves

As Registrar and CEO, Dangut coordinates WAEC’s operations across all member countries and works with their governments on examination and assessment matters. The task is different from running a single national office. Each country has its own education ministry, school calendar and public expectations, and the Registrar has to keep the council’s standards consistent across all of them.

His new role is a step from the largest national office to the regional centre. That is useful experience. The Nigeria office handles the greatest number of candidates, so he has already managed the scale of operations that the council’s headquarters oversees.

Why Amos Dangut Is Trending Now

The reason is timing. He took office in October 2026, only weeks after WAEC defended this year’s Nigerian examination results against public criticism. Parents, students and teachers are watching to see whether the new leadership will change how results are managed, how disputes are handled and how technology is used. His record in digital marking and secure question papers suggests that technology will remain a central theme of his term.

Family and Personal Life

Dangut keeps his private life out of public view. No reliable source documents a spouse or children, so this biography lists none. Treat with caution any website that claims otherwise without a verifiable basis.

What His Journey Teaches

Three lessons stand out. First, institutional trust is built slowly. He spent more than two decades inside one organisation, moving through test development, security and administration before reaching the top. Second, technical systems support integrity. In an exam body, serialised papers and digital records are a form of public protection. Third, continued learning pays off in public service. He added a doctorate and a master’s in education administration while building his career, and that preparation matches the work of managing a regional institution.
