The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has formally declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 presidential election. The declaration came with conditions attached. State Chairman Amah Abraham, who is also the party’s deputy governorship candidate, made it in Umuahia on Thursday, at the inauguration of the Abia State Presidential Campaign Committee for Tinubu’s re-election. freedomonlinefreedomonline
The timing shows how quickly Nigeria’s political map is being redrawn ahead of the polls. A party that governed Abia for years and is now fighting to return to power has agreed to campaign alongside the ruling All Progressives Congress at the presidential level. It has also made clear it has no plan to step aside in the governorship contest.
Abraham spoke on behalf of the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Kelechi Anosike, and the wider membership in Abia. He said the chapter was acting under the National Rainbow Coalition initiative championed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He described the decision as a product of political cooperation and said the wider interests of Abia should outrank partisan differences. freedomonline
The support comes with a price, though. Abraham said it must rest on equity, fairness, mutual respect and reciprocity, and that the PDP expects APC leaders in Abia to respond in kind with an arrangement that benefits both sides. He added that the party remains open to alliances ahead of the state governorship election, and that cooperation at the presidential level should not be read as surrender of its identity or its governorship ambition. freedomonline
That last point is where the arrangement could get complicated. Abia’s governorship race has drawn several parties. In September, the state PDP inaugurated the management team of its campaign council for the 2027 governorship election, with leaders promising a grassroots and issue-based effort to reclaim the state. At that event, the council chairman, Kanu, argued that Abia remains a PDP state and that the Labour Party administration is only holding power temporarily. thisdaylivethisdaylive
The APC in Abia has been just as confident. Earlier this year, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma pledged to deliver Abia for Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 elections. Local party figures have said the APC will take the state and that most strong politicians from other parties have moved over to it. Those two ambitions overlap. A PDP that backs Tinubu while expecting favours in the governorship contest is making a demand the APC may find hard to meet, because its own aspirants want the same ticket. vanguardngr
The wider national structure explains why the APC is willing to accept this kind of support. Tinubu chairs the Presidential Campaign Council, with Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda as first and second vice chairmen. Senator Abdulaziz Yari is the director general. The council was inaugurated at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja last month. The expanded list includes leading opposition figures, among them Wike of the PDP and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, despite push-back from sections of the APC. The same report said the Presidency and the party are aiming for a smooth run to a presidential poll set for January 16, 2027. The broad design is clear. By bringing in governors, ministers and party leaders from other platforms, the campaign hopes to build a coalition that stretches beyond the APC’s own base. State-level committees such as the one in Abia are meant to carry that structure down to the grassroots, where votes are won.
It is important to be precise about what the Abia declaration does and does not mean. Fact-checkers have already dealt with a viral claim that the PDP as a party had endorsed Tinubu. Dubawa found that there is no official decision or resolution by the PDP backing Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election. Legit.ng traced the earlier endorsement to a gathering of allies aligned with Wike, and not any meeting of the PDP’s national executive committee or national working committee. Another bloc, associated with former minister Tanimu Turaki, has continued to treat the PDP as an opposition party. In March, a senior PDP figure, Daboikiabo Warmate, said the party would produce its own presidential candidate and that Wike’s support for Tinubu was his personal view. So the Abia chapter’s position reflects one side of a divided party, not a unified national stance. It does, however, give the Wike-led coalition a concrete state-level example to point to.
Momentum in Abia has been building for some weeks. On Monday, the Strategic Mobilisation Network for Tinubu Continuity 2027 held a session in Umuahia. A PDP Board of Trustees member from Abia Central, Tony Ezebiro, told the gathering that the PDP and APC had agreed to work together for the President’s re-election, and said he expected the emerging coalition to deliver substantial votes. At the same event, former lawmaker Sam Onuigbo made an economic case for a second term. He cited growth of 3.87 per cent in 2025 and 4.43 per cent in the second quarter of 2026. Those are the speaker’s claims, and readers should check them against official data before drawing conclusions. galaxytvonlinegalaxytvonline
The opposition has not gone away. Tinubu won in 2023 as the APC candidate, defeating Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and he is expected to face both men again in 2027. Abia matters in that contest. It sits in the South-East, a region where Obi drew heavy support in the last presidential election, and the APC has worked for months to widen its footprint there. Securing local PDP structures, even partially, could blunt the opposition’s advantage on the ground. legit
Whether that pays off depends on delivery. Party chairmen can announce support, but voters decide whether to follow. The PDP in Abia must now convince its own supporters that backing a candidate from a rival party serves their interest, while also asking those same supporters to vote for its governorship candidate. The APC must decide whether to honour the reciprocity Abraham has demanded, or to treat the endorsement as free support and keep its own governorship plans intact.
For now, both sides have an interest in keeping the arrangement alive. The APC gets another opposition voice in its corner a little over two months before the poll. The Abia PDP gets visibility and a seat in a national conversation it might otherwise be shut out of. The first real test will come when candidate lists, campaign rallies and local alliances start to compete for the same voters in Umuahia, Aba and beyond.
