Apple’s next premium iPhone launch is shaping up to be one of the company’s most unusual in years. While Apple has traditionally introduced its entire flagship iPhone family in September, current reports indicate that the company is preparing to split the iPhone 18 lineup across two release periods.
That means the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive this September, while the standard iPhone 18,
iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air are reportedly being pushed into spring 2027. The change could make
the iPhone 18 Pro release date particularly important for buyers who normally wait for Apple’s September event before upgrading.
As of August 24, 2026, Apple has not officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro or confirmed its launch date. However, multiple reports point to an early September announcement, with September 8 or September 9 currently emerging as the most likely dates. MacRumors reports that September 8 is considered the strongest possibility, while other recent reporting has also pointed to September 9.
The important distinction is that an announcement date is not the same as the retail release date. If Apple follows its established pattern, the phones could be announced during a September event, followed by pre-orders later that week and store availability roughly a week after that.
For shoppers searching for the iPhone 18 Pro release date, the current expectation is therefore a September 2026 launch rather than a confirmed specific retail date.
Apple’s reported change to the release schedule is perhaps the biggest story surrounding the new generation. Instead of putting the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and other models on sale at the same time, Apple is expected to divide the lineup into premium and more affordable launches.
The first phase is expected to include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone. The second phase is expected to arrive in spring 2027 and include the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2.

For consumers, however, it creates an important question: should you wait for the standard iPhone 18, or buy the iPhone 18 Pro when it arrives?
For people who want Apple’s newest flagship as soon as possible, the answer is likely to be the Pro models. The standard iPhone 18 reportedly will not be part of the September launch. Supplier-related reporting has also provided additional support for the idea that the standard model has been moved to 2027.
The iPhone 18 Pro itself is expected to remain relatively familiar in design. Current reports suggest Apple is not planning a radical external redesign, with the overall appearance expected to remain close to the iPhone 17 Pro generation.
One of the most noticeable changes could be a smaller Dynamic Island. Reports suggest Apple is working toward reducing the size of the front-facing camera and Face ID area, although the extent of the change remains uncertain. A smaller Dynamic Island would give the display a cleaner appearance without necessarily eliminating the cutout altogether.
The iPhone 18 Pro camera system could receive a more meaningful upgrade. Multiple reports have pointed to a variable-aperture main camera, which would give the camera more control over how much light reaches the sensor.
That could be particularly useful in challenging lighting conditions and could give photographers more flexibility than the fixed-aperture systems used on previous iPhone generations. However, because Apple has not announced the hardware, this remains a reported feature rather than a confirmed specification.
The processor is another area where expectations are high. The iPhone 18 Pro is widely expected to feature a new A20 Pro chip, which reports suggest Apple could manufacture using a 2nm process. This shift could improve performance and power efficiency, although we will not know the real-world gains until Apple demonstrates the chip and independent testing becomes available.
Battery life could benefit from those efficiency improvements as well. Reports have pointed toward larger or more efficient battery configurations, particularly for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Some early reports have suggested a battery capacity above 5,000mAh for the larger model, but Apple has not confirmed such a figure, so it should not be treated as final.
Connectivity could also receive an upgrade through Apple’s reported C2 modem. Apple has been moving toward greater control over its own modem technology, and the next-generation modem is expected to focus on efficiency and connectivity improvements. Some reports have also discussed expanded satellite-related capabilities, although the exact feature set remains unconfirmed.
Another expected change is the display. The iPhone 18 Pro is reportedly set to retain a roughly 6.3-inch screen, while the Pro Max should continue with a larger display around 6.9 inches. Reports also suggest Apple could introduce improvements to the underlying LTPO OLED technology, potentially helping with efficiency and battery life.
Apple’s software will naturally be another major part of the launch. The iPhone 18 Pro will arrive alongside Apple’s next major iOS generation, while Apple Intelligence is also becoming a larger part of the company’s software strategy.
Apple announced new Apple Intelligence capabilities in June 2026, including deeper system-level features and improvements across apps and services. The company said the new capabilities would become available to users in the fall, making the iPhone 18 Pro launch an important opportunity for Apple to showcase its latest AI features alongside new hardware.
The reported launch colors are also generating interest. Dark Cherry has been widely tipped as one of the headline colors for the new Pro models, while lighter shades have also been mentioned in recent reports. Color availability can vary by model and market, however, so buyers should wait for Apple’s official announcement before making a decision based on rumored finishes.
The biggest practical issue for buyers may ultimately be price. Apple has not announced pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro,
and current reports about potential price increases vary considerably. Some reports have suggested that manufacturing
costs and new components could push prices higher, but there is not enough confirmed information to establish a reliable final figure.
For buyers in markets such as Nigeria, the eventual local price will also depend on currency movements, taxes,
import costs, retailer margins and official distribution. The U.S. launch price alone should therefore not be used as a
prediction of what the iPhone 18 Pro will cost locally.
The release schedule is easier to understand when broken into two stages.
The second stage is expected in spring 2027. That launch is reportedly reserved for the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2. MacRumors currently lists the standard iPhone 18 as a spring 2027 product rather than a September 2026 release.
For anyone planning an upgrade, this split is significant. In previous years, waiting for September meant getting access to both the Pro and standard versions of the newest generation. In 2026, waiting for September may effectively mean choosing from Apple’s premium models.
The iPhone 18 Pro is consequently expected to be positioned as the main traditional flagship for the fall. The foldable iPhone will likely attract much of the attention because of its new form factor, but the Pro models should remain the safer choice for users who prefer the familiar iPhone design and established camera layout.
It is also worth keeping expectations under control. Although the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to bring several technical improvements, current reports do not indicate that Apple plans to completely reinvent the iPhone. The design should remain broadly familiar, while Apple is likely to focus many of the upgrades on the cameras, processor, battery efficiency, connectivity and display technology.
That could make the iPhone 18 Pro an evolutionary upgrade rather than a revolutionary one. For owners of older iPhones, however, the combined improvements could still make the new model a significant step forward.
The safest prediction at this point is that Apple will unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, with retail availability expected later in the month if Apple follows its usual launch pattern. The exact announcement, pre-order and release dates remain unconfirmed until Apple sends out its official event invitation and product announcement.

For now, prospective buyers should pay particular attention to Apple’s September event. If the current reporting is accurate, it will not simply mark the arrival of another Pro iPhone. It will also signal the beginning of a new release strategy in which Apple’s iPhone lineup is spread across the calendar instead of arriving as one large September launch.
iPhone 18 Pro Latest Release Date
As mentioned above, Apple usually holds its keynote events for the iPhone on a Tuesday. This year, however, I believe it’s going to be on a Wednesday, you can read the research I did to back this up here.
Essentially, it’s because Apple has never held an iPhone event on the day after Labor Day, which this year falls on
Monday, Sept. 7. In years when Labor Day has been on that day before (which it isn’t always as it is specifically
the first Monday in September, of course), the keynote has come later, making Wednesday, Sept. 9 the most likely.
“The last time the holiday was on that day was in 2020, but the iPhone event that year was delayed until October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time Labor Day was on Sept. 7 in a normal year was in 2015, and the iPhone event was held on Wednesday, Sept. 9 that year,” as MacRumors pointed out, adding, “Accordingly, the most likely date for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra event this year is Wednesday, Sept. 9 until proven otherwise.”
I agree with that, and I don’t believe it will be proven otherwise. So, when the site added an extra line, I disagree.
“Another possibility is that Apple waits until Tuesday, Sept. 15 to hold the event, in which case pre-orders would likely begin on Friday, September 18. Then, the devices would likely be released on Friday, September 25,” it said. I’m sure that won’t be the case.
One other thing: in his latest Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, on Sunday, Aug. 23, it looks like Mark Gurman isn’t as sure about the Sept. 9 keynote date as I am even now.
“The foldable iPhone, set to be introduced at a launch event on or around Sept. 9, is what I consider the company’s most exciting new product in several years,” he said.
Hmm, “on or around.” Tim Hardwick at MacRumors uses the same phrase: “Apple’s first foldable is set to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at a launch event on or around September 9. Reports suggest the device could start at $2,000 and even climb past $2,500 for higher storage tiers,” they claimed.
Well, I may end up with egg on my face and things could change, but I’m still sticking my neck out. The keynote will be on Sept. 9, not around it.
It’ll be held in the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park, the company’s Cupertino HQ, beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. U.K. time.
iPhone 18 Pro Release: Pre-Orders Open Saturday, Sept. 12
Get ready to snap up the phone or watch of your dreams on this day, though it may not be the day you were expecting.
This is an interesting one. Almost always, pre-orders open on the Friday following the keynote. This year, that’s Friday, Sept. 11. Apple has been careful to avoid this meaningful date in the past and since it’s the 25th anniversary of the day, it looks like it will move pre-orders to the following day, Saturday, Sept. 12.
“Back when the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus event fell on Wednesday, Sept. 9 in 2015, pre-orders began on Saturday, Sept. 12, rather than Friday, Sept. 11. Friday is a much more common day for iPhone pre-orders to begin, but Apple may have been respectfully avoiding Sept. 11 in 2015 due to the 9/11 anniversary,” MacRumors went on.
iPhone 18 Pro Release: iOS 27 Launch, Monday, Sept. 14
The software which will be pre-installed on the new iPhones will also work on every phone from the iPhone 11 onwards.
The general release of the software looks like it will take place on Monday, Sept. 14, if last year’s routine is followed. That’s the most likely, though it could be the following day. Look out for it at around 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. U.K. time.
iPhone 18 Pro Release Date: Friday, Sept. 18
Assuming all the other items in this list are correct, the on-sale date of the new hardware is a shoo-in.
The new iPhone 18 Pro will go on sale on the Friday in the week after the keynote. This year, that’s Friday, Sept. 18.
