Warsaw witnessed one of the more surreal scenes in the ongoing global debate over artificial intelligence this week, as roughly 30 robots gathered outside Poland’s Ministry of Digital Affairs, waving flags, marching in loops and playing recorded chants through loudspeakers to call for tighter oversight of AI development. The demonstration, staged on September 7, brought together bipedal humanoid machines and dog-like quadruped robots in what organisers described as an attempt to make an abstract policy debate feel immediate and physical.
The event was put together by Democratism, a Polish initiative that says its mission is to spark public conversation about how artificial intelligence and robotisation are reshaping the labour market. Rather than staging a conventional rally with human placard-holders, the group opted to let its subject matter speak for itself, quite literally, by putting machines on the street to argue for their own regulation.
Loudspeakers carried slogans including “Defend workplaces,” “Time for rules” and “Don’t wait, regulate” as the robots moved through their choreographed routine. One of the humanoid units present, a model called Agibot A3, was quoted by AFP as saying the robots were there to show that this technology is already a lived reality rather than a distant hypothetical.
Grzegorz Kuliś, the organiser behind the protest and a figure with past experience advising Poland’s Labor Market Council, framed the demonstration as a warning rather than a rejection of automation itself. He told AFP that the central concern was the potential displacement of workers, both through humanoid robots taking on physical tasks and through AI systems increasingly capable of handling cognitive work once considered safe from automation. His message was blunt: without regulatory action soon, Poland and other economies could find themselves confronting a problem that grows harder to manage the longer it is left unaddressed. Kuliś argued that clear rules were needed to act as a shield protecting workers, rather than leaving the pace and shape of AI adoption entirely to the companies building it.
There was a pointed irony built into the protest’s design. By using robots capable of moving independently to stage what looked like a spontaneous demonstration, organisers wanted to underline just how far the underlying technology has already progressed. Kuliś noted that the machines could already move around freely on their own, which was precisely the point: the capability being protested against was also the method of protest.
The demonstration did not go unnoticed by the government it was aimed at. Poland’s Digital Affairs Minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski, came out to meet with Kuliś in person while the robots continued their circuit outside the ministry building. Gawkowski acknowledged the underlying concern directly, saying that AI models operating without adequate controls, especially once embedded into humanoid robots that will keep evolving as robotics technology matures, represent a serious problem that needs addressing. According to Polish outlet Opolska360, Gawkowski also told the crowd that Poland was the first European Union member state to introduce active oversight mechanisms for its AI market, and he used the moment to outline further plans, including a proposed Commission for the Development and Security of Artificial Intelligence and regulatory sandboxes that would let companies test AI systems under supervision before releasing them commercially.
That policy context matters. The protest landed at a moment when Poland is actively working through how to implement the European Union’s AI Act, the bloc-wide framework designed to categorise AI systems by risk level and impose corresponding obligations on developers and deployers. Poland’s president signed legislation in July advancing the country’s implementation of that framework, but Kuliś and Democratism argue that formal legal steps on paper are not the same as functioning safeguards on the ground, particularly as humanoid robotics and generative AI systems continue to advance faster than most regulatory processes can track. The EU’s own framework, detailed on the European Commission’s regulatory page for artificial intelligence, sets out phased obligations that are still being rolled out across member states, which helps explain why advocacy groups feel there is a narrowing window to shape how those rules get applied domestically.
Robotics-as-protest is an unusual tactic, but it fits a broader pattern of 2026, a year in which humanoid robots have moved from trade show novelties to genuine talking points in labour and policy circles. Companies developing these machines have been racing to demonstrate dexterity, mobility and task versatility at consumer electronics events throughout the year, and the same models drawing applause on exhibition floors are now being cited as evidence in arguments about job displacement. Warsaw’s protest essentially borrowed that showcase energy and redirected it toward a regulatory audience instead of a commercial one.
Whether the demonstration changes the pace of Polish or EU-wide policy remains to be seen. Regulatory sandboxes and oversight commissions take time to stand up, and the practical effect of the AI Act’s provisions will depend heavily on enforcement capacity rather than legislative text alone.
