Some leaders and members of opposition political parties in Abia State have declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development involves members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and other political groups. Their support adds a new dimension to the political contest in Abia State as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the next presidential election.
Abraham Amah, identified as the PDP state chairman and deputy governorship candidate, announced his support for Tinubu during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council on November 5, 2026.
Amah also received an interparty mobilisation role in the campaign structure. The appointment places him in a position to engage political supporters across party lines and mobilise backing for the president’s second-term ambition.
His declaration is significant because the PDP remains one of the major opposition parties in Nigeria. However, his endorsement does not mean that the entire Abia PDP structure has defected to the APC or officially adopted Tinubu as its presidential candidate.
The development could create competing political loyalties within the state’s PDP organisation, particularly as the 2027 election approaches. It also raises questions about how other party leaders and candidates in Abia will respond to Amah’s position.
The support from members of the SDP, APM and other political groups further shows how Tinubu’s campaign is seeking to attract political backing beyond the APC. Such alliances could strengthen interparty mobilisation, although their actual impact will depend on the level of support they attract among party members and voters.
The development comes amid wider political uncertainty within Nigeria’s opposition parties.
In the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a Federal High Court judgment delivered on November 5 invalidated the Senator David Mark-led leadership and its decisions, including the presidential primary that produced Atiku Abubakar as the party’s candidate.
The ADC has rejected the judgment and announced plans to challenge it in court. The ruling has placed the party’s presidential and other candidate nominations at risk while the legal dispute continues.
The PDP is also dealing with an internal leadership dispute. On November 4, the Court of Appeal upheld the dismissal of a case seeking recognition for the Turaki-led interim committee. The faction has indicated plans to approach the Supreme Court.
These developments have added to the challenges facing opposition parties as they prepare for the 2027 general elections.
For Tinubu’s campaign, the support declared by Amah and members of other political groups provides an opportunity to expand political mobilisation in Abia State. However, the endorsement does not establish that the entire PDP has joined the president’s campaign or that all its members will support him at the polls.
