For decades, Nigeria’s oil industry belonged almost entirely to foreign majors and the national oil company. Austin Avuru helped change that. This Austin Avuru biography follows a geologist who spent twelve years at the state oil company, a decade at a pioneering Nigerian deepwater operator and then built his own company, Platform Petroleum, which became one of the two foundations of Seplat Energy. Under his leadership, Seplat grew into one of the country’s leading independent oil producers and listed in both London and Lagos. His story shows how technical skill, patience and deal making can turn an employee into an energy entrepreneur. This article covers his education, career and legacy.
Who Is Austin Avuru?
Augustine Ojunekwu “Austin” Avuru is a Nigerian geologist, energy entrepreneur and corporate leader. He co-founded Seplat and served as its pioneer chief executive officer from 2010 until he retired in 2020. He is the chairman of AA Holdings and of the AA Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that promotes change in education and healthcare. Avuru is a former president of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists and the author of books on the Nigerian petroleum industry.
Austin Avuru’s Age and Early Life
Avuru was born on August 17, 1958, in Ipetu-Ijesha in Osun State, and he turned 68 in August 2026. His parents came from Abbi in Delta State. He attended Orogun Grammar School for his early education, and his path shows a student who combined technical ability with wide reading. He is known to have attended literary gatherings with the writer Chinua Achebe while at university.
Austin Avuru’s Education
Avuru earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, with second class upper honours, from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1980. In 1992, he completed a postgraduate diploma in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Ibadan.
His training at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation gave him a second education. At the Petroleum Training Institute in Warri, he emerged as the best overall student in the corporation’s 1983 comprehensive training class, and he ranked first in geology, geophysics and petroleum engineering.
Starting at NNPC
Avuru’s career began through the National Youth Service Corps, which posted him to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in August 1980. He started as a well-site geologist. Over the next twelve years, he worked as a production seismologist and a reservoir engineer, and he spent time on attachment with Shell and Chevron, where supervisors rated his work as excellent.
He also earned the corporation’s Group Managing Director’s Merit Award for outstanding performance and distinguished professional and leadership qualities. The twelve years gave him deep technical knowledge of Nigerian reservoirs and a close view of how international companies operate.
A Decade at Allied Energy Resources
In 1992, Avuru left NNPC to join Allied Energy Resources, a pioneering indigenous deepwater operator led by the businessman Kase Lawal. He spent about ten years there as Exploration Manager and Technical Manager, later General Manager for Technical. The role placed him inside a Nigerian-owned company that competed in offshore exploration, which at the time was dominated by multinationals.
That decade taught him how an indigenous operator raises money, manages risk and works with partners. It also convinced him that he could build a company of his own.
Founding Platform Petroleum
In 2002, Avuru founded Platform Petroleum Limited. He served as its managing director until 2009. The company pursued upstream opportunities in Nigeria during a time when the government began to open more oil assets to local firms, and it became one of the foundations of Seplat.
Creating Seplat in 2009
In June 2009, Platform Petroleum and Shebah Exploration and Production Company, led by A.B.C. Orjiakor, joined forces to create Seplat Petroleum Development Company. The partners combined a technical operator with a strong financial and political network.
The company’s name reflects its origins. It combined the names of the two founding partners, and it was set up specifically to pursue upstream oil and gas opportunities in Nigeria.
Leading Seplat as Pioneer CEO
Avuru became Seplat’s chief executive officer on May 1, 2010, and he led the company for a decade. Under his leadership, Seplat listed on both the London Stock Exchange and the Nigerian Exchange, which made it the first Nigerian independent oil company to list on both markets at the same time. The company was also the only African exploration and production company on the main board of the London exchange.
He led Seplat’s purchase of major onshore assets from international oil companies. In 2015, the company announced the acquisition of stakes in two oil blocks from Chevron for $390 million. The deals showed how a Nigerian company could buy mature assets from multinationals and operate them successfully.
Retirement and Legacy at Seplat
Avuru retired from Seplat on July 31, 2020, and Roger Brown became chief executive. The company changed its name to Seplat Energy in 2021, and in 2022 it completed the purchase of Mobil Nigeria, ExxonMobil’s Nigerian subsidiary, for $1.28 billion. That transaction came after his departure, but it followed the path he had set: buy established assets and grow through acquisition.
Life After Seplat: AA Holdings and Writing
After retiring, Avuru focused on AA Holdings, which he chairs and which invests across sectors. He also devotes time to the AA Foundation, which supports education and healthcare initiatives.
Additionally, he writes. He is the author of “Politics, Economics and the Nigerian Petroleum Industry” and a co-author of “Nigerian Petroleum Business: A Handbook.” He has also released a management handbook about his own path, titled “My Entrepreneurship Journey,” which offers lessons for people who want to build companies.
Public Service and Industry Leadership
Avuru has held public roles as well. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists and served as its president. He has also been appointed to the board of NNPC Limited, the national oil company where he began his career, which brings his journey full circle.
Why Austin Avuru Draws Attention
His profile combines unusual elements: an employee who left the state company to build a private one, a founder who took an indigenous firm onto the London stock market and an author who shares his lessons in print. Readers who search for an Austin Avuru biography want to understand how someone built one of Nigeria’s best-known energy companies and what path he offers to others in the industry.
What His Career Teaches
Three lessons stand out. First, technical depth builds credibility. His years as a geologist and reservoir engineer earned respect from partners and lenders. Second, partnership beats going alone. Seplat came from combining Platform Petroleum’s technical skill with Shebah’s network and capital. Third, indigenous companies can compete with multinationals when they pick assets they understand. His acquisition record shows that local operators can run mature fields well and grow through disciplined deal making.
