Keisha Lance Bottoms has made history in American politics after winning the 2026 Georgia gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state. The Democratic candidate defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson in a closely watched contest, marking a significant milestone for political representation in the United States.

Bottoms’ victory also makes her the first woman elected governor of Georgia, a state that had never previously chosen a woman or a Black person to lead its government. Her election represents a major breakthrough for Black women in American politics, particularly at the state executive level, where their representation has remained limited.

The Associated Press called the race in Bottoms’ favour on Tuesday, November 3, after voters across Georgia participated in the 2026 midterm elections. Other major US media organisations also projected her victory. Jackson subsequently conceded, congratulating Bottoms as she prepared for the next stage of her political career.

The election was closely watched because Georgia has become an important battleground in American politics. Bottoms’ victory also ends more than two decades of Republican control of the state’s governor’s office, which had remained under Republican leadership since Sonny Perdue defeated Democratic incumbent Roy Barnes in 2002.

Bottoms defeated Jackson, a billionaire healthcare executive who invested heavily in his campaign. The Republican candidate presented himself as a political outsider and focused on issues including tax cuts, public safety and reducing government regulation. However, the final outcome gave the Democratic candidate the opportunity to make history and lead Georgia.

The result is particularly significant because Georgia has never elected a woman governor. Bottoms will therefore break two major barriers when she takes office: becoming the state’s first female governor and the first Black woman to be elected governor anywhere in the United States.

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms built her career through law, local government and national politics. Before entering the governor’s race, she served as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022, becoming one of the prominent Democratic political figures in the state.

Her journey into public service included working as a prosecutor and judge before entering elected politics. She won a seat on the Atlanta City Council in 2009 and later contested the city’s mayoral election. After a competitive campaign and runoff in 2017, she secured the mayoralty and became the leader of Georgia’s largest city.

As mayor, Bottoms served during a challenging period that included the COVID-19 pandemic, protests over racial injustice and public safety debates. Her administration also faced criticism over its handling of some issues affecting Atlanta. These experiences became part of the political debate during her campaign for governor, as her Republican opponent questioned her record in city leadership.

Bottoms did not seek a second term as Atlanta mayor after completing her first term in 2022. She subsequently joined the administration of former US President Joe Biden, serving as director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and later as a senior adviser. Her experience in local government and the White House helped establish her profile beyond Georgia.

Her election victory follows years of efforts by Black women to secure greater representation in American political leadership. One prominent figure in that movement was Stacey Abrams, who became the first Black woman nominated for governor by a major US political party when she secured the Democratic nomination in Georgia in 2018.

Abrams contested the governorship again in 2022 but lost both elections to Republican Brian Kemp. Although she did not win the position, her campaigns helped bring national attention to voter participation and representation in Georgia politics. Bottoms has now achieved the breakthrough that previous candidates were unable to secure in the state.

During the 2026 campaign, Bottoms presented proposals focused on healthcare, education, household expenses and economic development. One of her major priorities was expanding access to Medicaid in Georgia, a policy that would require legislative approval. She also discussed improving access to the state’s prekindergarten programme and supporting families facing rising living costs.

Another issue that featured prominently in the campaign was the cost of groceries. Bottoms proposed creating a path for local governments to reduce or eliminate sales taxes on groceries, an idea aimed at easing expenses for households. She also proposed removing the state income tax for public school teachers as part of her education-related plans.

Data centre development was another important subject during the election campaign. Georgia has experienced significant growth in data centre construction, bringing debates about energy demand, infrastructure and the effects of large technology projects on local communities. Bottoms supported a proposed pause on new data centre construction while experts considered how the state should manage future development.

Her Republican opponent, Rick Jackson, campaigned on a different set of priorities. The healthcare executive emphasised economic development, job creation, public safety and reducing government regulation. He also used his business background to argue that his experience could help him manage state government.

Jackson reportedly spent more than $200 million of his personal fortune on his campaign, making the financial scale of the contest a major feature of the election. Despite the significant spending, Bottoms emerged as the winner, according to projections from US media organisations.

The election also reflected Georgia’s changing political landscape. Republicans had maintained control of the governor’s office for more than 20 years, even as Democrats achieved important victories in other statewide and federal contests. The state supported Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and Donald Trump in 2024, illustrating its importance in national electoral competition.

Bottoms’ victory is therefore significant beyond her personal achievement. It returns the governor’s office to Democratic control and creates a new political situation in Georgia. However, the result does not automatically mean that all her campaign proposals will become law. The state legislature and other political institutions will influence what policies can be implemented.

Her proposed Medicaid expansion, for example, would require legislative support. Other plans involving taxation, education and data centre development would also face discussions with lawmakers and relevant state authorities. The extent to which she can deliver on her campaign commitments will depend partly on negotiations with the legislature.

The election night results also produced other historic developments in American politics. Stacey Plaskett was elected governor of the US Virgin Islands, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Florida elected Republican Byron Donalds as governor, making him the first Black Republican elected governor in the United States.

These outcomes highlighted the growing diversity of political leadership across the country during the 2026 midterm elections. However, Bottoms’ victory remains distinct because she is the first Black woman elected to govern one of the 50 US states.

For Georgia, her election opens a new chapter after a long period of Republican control of the governor’s office. It also places renewed attention on the state’s political priorities, including healthcare access, education, affordability and economic development.

Bottoms now faces the responsibility of turning her campaign commitments into policies while working with lawmakers and communities across Georgia. Her background in municipal government and national public service will form part of the experience she brings to the role.

Her victory is a landmark moment for Black women in American politics and a defining development in Georgia’s political history. By defeating Rick Jackson, Keisha Lance Bottoms has become the first Black woman elected governor of a US state, achieving a milestone that previous generations of candidates had worked towards.
