Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of a 26-year-old man, Kehinde Asimiyu, following a violent altercation at Olodo Garage in Ibadan. The arrests come amid heightened tension in the community after the fatal incident, which also triggered unrest and prompted the deployment of additional security personnel to the area.

The suspects were identified as Taiwo Babarinde and Ishola Semiu. According to the police, Babarinde is suspected of inflicting the fatal injury on the deceased, while Semiu was arrested over his alleged involvement in the incident. Both men are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

The incident reportedly occurred on November 1, 2026, at Olodo Garage, located in the Olodo area of Ibadan. In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, the Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, explained that the command received a report alleging that Asimiyu had been stabbed with a broken bottle following an altercation between him and Babarinde.

The police said the deceased’s family initially learnt about the attack after an unidentified motorcycle rider arrived at their residence and informed them of what had happened. The development prompted the family and authorities to respond to the situation as the circumstances surrounding the incident became known.

Following receipt of the report, police operatives and a patrol team were immediately deployed to the scene. The injured man was subsequently rushed to Academy Hospital, Texaco, along Iwo Road in Ibadan, for medical attention. However, a doctor on duty confirmed him dead after he was brought to the hospital.

His remains were later deposited at Adejare Embalming Centre for preservation. The police also said photographs were taken as part of the preliminary investigative procedures to document the incident and support further inquiries.

During the subsequent investigation, officers arrested Babarinde and Semiu. The police identified Babarinde as the suspect believed to have inflicted the fatal injury, while Semiu was described as another person suspected of involvement in the incident. The command has not publicly established the precise roles allegedly played by each suspect beyond those initial descriptions.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, for a comprehensive investigation. The specialised department is expected to examine the available evidence, establish the circumstances that led to the altercation and determine whether additional individuals were involved.

Although the police have confirmed the arrests, several details surrounding the incident remain under investigation. The exact cause of the disagreement, what happened immediately before the alleged stabbing and the full sequence of events leading to Asimiyu’s death have not been conclusively established in the police statement.

The killing also created a security challenge in the Olodo community. According to the police, unrest erupted at the Olodo Police Outpost following the incident, raising concerns about a possible breakdown of law and order. Subsequent reports of threats by suspected hoodlums further increased security concerns and made additional intervention necessary.

The situation prompted the Oyo State Police Command to reinforce its presence in the area. Additional operational personnel were deployed with support from the Nigerian Army, Amotekun Corps, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other local security components.

The joint deployment was intended to prevent further disturbances, protect residents and restore public confidence. The police said the coordinated security operation had helped restore normalcy, although personnel would maintain a presence in the area to prevent further incidents.

The involvement of multiple security agencies highlights the seriousness of the situation following the killing. When violent incidents generate tension within a community, the risk of retaliatory attacks and confrontations can increase, particularly when residents demand immediate answers or justice.

The police have therefore urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands. Authorities stressed that disagreements should be resolved through lawful channels and that anyone with relevant information should cooperate with investigators rather than engage in violence.

Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, also directed the Area Commander in Moniya to engage community stakeholders as part of efforts to address the tensions and prevent a recurrence.

Acting on the directive, the Area Commander held a meeting with representatives of the Local Council Development Area, leaders of tricycle and motorcycle operators, and youth leaders. The meeting focused on identifying practical ways to improve communication between residents and security agencies, resolve local concerns and promote peaceful coexistence.

The participation of motorcycle and tricycle operators is particularly relevant because transport activities are an important part of everyday life in communities such as Olodo. Commercial transport workers regularly interact with residents, commuters and other businesses, making cooperation between their associations and security agencies important for maintaining order.

The discussions also provided an opportunity for community representatives to raise concerns and identify ways to prevent disagreements from escalating into violence. Effective communication between transport operators, young people, community leaders and law enforcement agencies can help authorities respond more quickly when tensions emerge.

Olugbenga appealed to residents to remain calm, reject violence and embrace dialogue when resolving disagreements. He also warned individuals or groups against exploiting the incident to cause further unrest or threaten public safety.

The commissioner assured residents that the police would continue working to protect lives and property. He encouraged members of the public to provide credible and timely information that could assist security agencies in carrying out their responsibilities.

The command also warned that individuals whose actions threaten public peace would face appropriate action. It said security measures would remain in place around Olodo and neighbouring communities to discourage further disturbances.

Beyond the immediate investigation, the incident has renewed attention on the importance of peaceful conflict resolution and community security. Disagreements between individuals can escalate rapidly when there is no effective intervention, particularly in busy public locations where confrontations may attract crowds.

Community leaders and transport associations can contribute to preventing such situations by encouraging members to resolve disputes peacefully and report serious disagreements to the appropriate authorities. Residents also have a responsibility to avoid spreading unverified information that could increase tension or encourage retaliation.

For investigators, the priority will be establishing exactly what happened at Olodo Garage on November 1. This includes examining available evidence, obtaining relevant witness accounts and determining the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of a broken bottle.

The transfer of the case to the SCID in Iyaganku is expected to support a more detailed investigation. Any decision on prosecution will depend on the evidence gathered and the applicable legal process.

It is also important to remember that arrest does not amount to conviction. Although the police have identified Babarinde and Semiu as suspects, the allegations against them must be examined through the judicial process. The investigation and subsequent court proceedings, where applicable, will determine legal responsibility.

For the family of Kehinde Asimiyu, the incident represents the loss of a 26-year-old man under circumstances that are still being investigated. The police have not announced further details about funeral arrangements or any additional findings concerning the deceased.

Residents of Olodo and surrounding communities will also be watching the investigation and security response closely. Restoring normal activities, preventing further violence and ensuring that the case is handled through lawful procedures will be important in maintaining confidence within the area.

The Oyo State Police Command has maintained that it is committed to protecting residents and preventing further disturbances. With two suspects in custody and the investigation now before the SCID, authorities are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding Asimiyu’s death.

For now, the police are appealing for calm and cooperation as the investigation progresses. The arrests mark an important development in the case, while the continued security deployment and engagement with community stakeholders are intended to prevent the tragedy from triggering further violence in Olodo, Ibadan.
